Double Michelin Recognition for Thomas Carr's Restaurants
It's a fantastic time for #teamcarr as they celebrate not one, but two recognitions from Michelin!
Ilfracombe chef, Thomas Carr and his teams have not one, but two reasons to be celebrating this week.
He was delighted to hear that he maintained his Michelin star for Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room for the third year running, but was then very pleasantly surprised to hear that his new venture, Thomas Carr Seafood & Grill which only opened in February this year, has been recommended in the new Michelin Guide 2019.
The Seafood & Grill, which was opened following a successful Kickstarter campaign and led by Thomas's brother Kevin Carr, had been a dream of Thomas’s for many years and despite it being the new kid on the block, has been received to critical acclaim in the short time since it’s doors opened; most notably by renowned food critic Jay Rayner, who in June of this year reviewed the newcomer on the Ilfracombe culinary scene and recommended it in his column in The Observer, stating that the skate wing was the “best version of this dish ever laid in front of me”.
The Olive Room, based on Ilfracombe’s historic Fore Street, serving 4, 6 and 8 course chef’s taster menus, celebrated its 4th anniversary in August this year and first received it’s Michelin star in the 2017 Michelin Guide.
Thomas, labelled as a ‘Seafood Supremo’ by Michelin early this year, is clearly delighted at this year’s recognitions, saying “I am so proud of the teams at both the Olive Room and the Seafood & Grill. It’s been a really tough year trying to maintain our high standard of food and service at the Olive Room whilst launching a new business from scratch, but we’ve done it and that is down to hard work and dedication of the fantastic teams at both restaurants. Kevin and Chris have done a magnificent job getting the Seafood & Grill up and running and creating a great space for guests to relax whilst enjoying quality, affordable food and drink.
We’re obviously delighted with the recognition of the continued effort at the Olive Room, but I think it’s safe to say that we are a mix of shocked and delighted that the Seafood & Grill has been recommended so early on in its establishment.”.
Head Chef of Thomas Carr Seafood & Grill, and long time friend of Thomas, Chris Essex is “over the moon” with news, saying “it’s really all down to the dedication of our team that we have achieved this great recognition. It’s been a lot of hard work, but we have a fresh, young team who’ve taken on the challenge with drive and enthusiasm and it’s great to see it start to pay off”
Thomas added “It’s yet another nod to the amazing culinary scene we have here in Ilfracombe. We were really happy to hear earlier in the week that The Antidote had received the Bib Gourmand recognition from Michelin, one of only 27 new additions for this year, so its yet another stamp on the map for our town as a foodie destination”.
